Bug#347950: xserver-xorg: no longer finding evdev mouse driver on startup!

X no longer recognizes the evdev input driver for my logitech mx1000 at startup.
I can only get it to use the ExplorerPS/2 protocol in its place which
only recognizes three of its 12 buttons, effectively castrating it
to the point of stupefying uselessness.


Despite Once upon a time having all 12 buttons working flawlessly with
evdev including horizontal scroll (somewhere back in 6.8.2ishness) i had
in recent months noticed this driver to be in the unfortunate state of
seeming experimental decline , which started around the time that it
forced you to use 16 buttons whether or not you had that many buttons on
your mouse or not.  At that point, i could never get horizontal scroll
working anymore and annoying double events started occuring when using
the cruise control buttons.  However with the installation of
xserver-xorg version 6.9.0.dfsg.1-3 evdev is not even recognized as a
legit protocol anymore despite the driver still existing as evdev_drv.so
in the input modules directory.

Attached in the log at startup of startx.


I don't think it's unreasonable to at least request provision of a
debian source package for xserver-xorg so as not to have to
download,compile, and
install X in its brute entirety merely because  the evdev
code is tossing off into senility.  This would save myself and i'm sure
others a good deal of productivity and time and would be greatly
appreciated.  Please advise.

Have you tried using xmodmap and the evdev driver to supply the necessary
parameters for your extra buttons?

   Driver   "evdev"

but anyway, there is an updated README espaecially for the evdev
driver in the docS.

Is this right? My evdev-driven devices did work without any special
"Load" lines for evdev. I tried with them and without, no difference.

That said, even when configured properly, the new evdev driver seems
to have some substantial issues with the MX1000 if not other mice, that
the old driver:mouse protocol:evdev configuration didn't exhibit. (See
my bugs, #347677 (also submitted upstream) and #347681)

Perhaps it would be useful to bring back the old protocol:evdev option
until upstream makes some progress with these?

Works fine for me without "Load" lines too.

The MX1000 works fine for me on i386 (see
http://blog.blackdown.de/2006/01/15/updated-logitech-mx1000-configuration/)

On powerpc evdev support was broken in 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2 (see #346460).
The bug was closed with 6.9.0.dfsg.1-3.  I somewhat doubt it really
got fixed but I had no chance to try -3 on powerpc yet.

Yes.  If you actually read the startx log of my submitted bug
report you'll see the:

(**) Option "Protocol" "evdev"
(EE) Mouse1: Unknown protocol "evdev"
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse1"

Which chokes startx, due to not being able to find the mouse driver.
This obviously occurs before even getting to the stage where Xmodmap
configuration is viable.

Ah, I'm sorry, I had assumed that you knew what you were doing. You'll want
to add a Load "evdev" in the modules section of your config file. You'll
then want to switch the driver for your mouse to "evdev", not the protocol.
Finally, you'll want to point your driver to /dev/input/event#, where # is
whichever file the kernel assigns to your device.

If you look at the manpage for evdev(4x) you'll see that the majority of
your options that are available for the mouse(4x) driver are not available,
so you may as well comment them out. That's why you'll need something like
xmodmap.

I'm also on i386. Just about a week ago I stumbled across the original config i posted on bug #347677, which obsoleted the need for that random click hack I wrote. The new evdev driver requires that hack again, plus generates keyboard events ('p' and 'o' on qwerty, 'r' and 'l' on dvorak) when the horizontal scroll is used. Bug #347677 describes a situation that regularly leaves my system completely non-responsive, with the exception of ssh'ing in remotely.

I see the extra events from the cruise control buttons.  Horizontal
scrolling works fine for me, I haven't seen any bogus key events so
far.

Actually I now can reproduce the key event issue on my laptop which
also has a synaptics touchpad configured but only if the touchpad
is configured with CorePointer and the MX1000 with SendCoreEvents.

If the MX1000 is CorePointer and the touchpad has SendCoreEvents,
everything works fine.

'xmodmap -pp' shows 12 buttons in the first case, 32 in the latter.

Thanks to the sage advice on using the evdev protocol/driver properly I
was able to get xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1.3 working fairly well except
for a few minor issues already mentioned such as the arbitrary o and p
on horizontal scrolling.

However it seems, at least in my case, that  with the upgrade to
6.9.0.dfsg.1.4 my button 2 (the scroll button pushed in) which happens
to also be the universal xserver 'paste' button seems completely vanished.

No amount of manipulation of xmodmap, xbindkeys, or even compiling the
evtest.c code running evtest /dev/input/mx1000 would allow this
key to function for me.

I realize with the ground up rewrite of 7.0 that provides super
modularity that this will all by moot and keep hoping to see the debs
entering experimental  soon so i can at least move on to the next set of
issues that seem to engulf this driver with every version upgrade.:)

Anyone else having similar issues with their mx1000?

As much as I was hoping the evdev rewrite was going to solve everyone's problems
and get us all singing and dancing in peaceful harmony, the latest reports from
upstream ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5696 ) seem to suggest
that not only is it not neccesarilly correcting some of the older issues, they're
adding new problems as they go.

The state of evdev right now to me seems to be some distance from a quality
acceptable even for consideration in unstable, and what's in unstable already seems
to be making enough problems to discourage serious testing.

How hard would it be to get the old Protocol:evdev AND the new rewritten evdev
driver so that people have the ability to give each implementation the testing they
need but still have an X server that's halfway practical?

X no longer recognizes the evdev input driver for my logitech mx1000 at startup.
I can only get it to use the ExplorerPS/2 protocol in its place which
only recognizes three of its 12 buttons, effectively castrating it
to the point of stupefying uselessness.


Despite Once upon a time having all 12 buttons working flawlessly with
evdev including horizontal scroll (somewhere back in 6.8.2ishness) i had
in recent months noticed this driver to be in the unfortunate state of
seeming experimental decline , which started around the time that it
forced you to use 16 buttons whether or not you had that many buttons on
your mouse or not.  At that point, i could never get horizontal scroll
working anymore and annoying double events started occuring when using
the cruise control buttons.  However with the installation of
xserver-xorg version 6.9.0.dfsg.1-3 evdev is not even recognized as a
legit protocol anymore despite the driver still existing as evdev_drv.so
in the input modules directory.

Attached in the log at startup of startx.


I don't think it's unreasonable to at least request provision of a
debian source package for xserver-xorg so as not to have to
download,compile, and
install X in its brute entirety merely because  the evdev
code is tossing off into senility.  This would save myself and i'm sure
others a good deal of productivity and time and would be greatly
appreciated.  Please advise.
