This looks very similar to bug #446762. I think this is caused by a
missing conflict on gnome-panel < 2.20, which is affected as well by the
GDM socket path transition.

Upgrading gnome-panel should fix your issue.

...and upgrading gnome-panel did!

i installed/upgraded to the following and all worked well:

gnome-panel_2.20.2-2
libwnck22_2.20.2-1
gnome-panel-data_2.20.2-2
