Bug#551604: iceweasel: Iceweasel is crashing "over night"

Andreas Tille
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.3-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

I use to keep my machine including firefox running also outside business
hours and I recently observed that iceweasel has crashed every morning
and I have to restart and restore the session.  I tried to find out the
web page which might be responsible for this problem and I was able to
reproduce this crash with the URL

   http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms170402.aspx

I have no idea whether this page has some active content which causes
the problem.  But if I keep iceweasel running over night with only this
page loaded it is crashed next morning.

I admit it is a bit hard to track down this problem but I wanted to
submit the issue in case there is a more general problem hidden behind.
Just tell me if you need more information.

Kind regards

        Andreas.

If you leave it running with another webpage open, does it still crash

Well, pages like

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174778.aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175455.aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175390.aspx

Might have the same effect.  When I observed the first crash I had these
pages open.  It crashed with all four pages.  It crashed with two of
these pages and it crashed with the page I reported as only open tab in
iceweasel.  If I had non of these pages open iceweasel did not crashed
over night.

If you know other "candidates" which might look similar I can test ist.
The crash was perfectly reproducible.  Any of thesa pages open -
iceweasel was vanished next morning.  Non of these pages open (I
normally have some tabs with Debian, Wikipedia, GMail, GCalendar etc.
open all the time)  - iceweasel looked like I left it in the evening.

Kind regards

         Andreas.

Attached.  Just tell me if you want me to drop some of them (and how to
do this reliably).

Thanks for the quick response

This is how you disable plugins...try to disable them gradually and then
see if the crash reappears. It might be Microsoft's Silverlight.

If I follow this I get only:

   plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types;application/pdf

> This is how you disable plugins...try to disable them gradually and then

This assumption sounds reasonable if talking about a msdn page - but I
have no visible sign that Silverlight - or rather the free implementation
Moonlight is installed.  But following this idea I try

    apt-get install moonlight-plugin-mozilla

and will see what happens this night.

I'll keep you informed about any result.

Kind regards

          Andreas.

Did you try to run MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 iceweasel overnight with
the msdn pages open ?

If that still crashes then, can you try installing iceweasel-dbg and gdb,
run iceweasel -g, type run at the gdb prompt, then leave it overnight
and the following day, send the result of "bt full" here?

Thanks

Mike

Actually, this doesn't disable plugins from being loaded, so they can
still do nasty things. The only safe option is
MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1.

Not yet - but I can try.

I can confirm that with moonlight-plugin-mozilla iceweasel did *not*
crashed.  When loading the page it looks different (without it has a
red design, with moonlight it has a blue design).  The browser has
not crashed.

So my next try is to run

     MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 iceweasel

this night, right?  DO you want me to deinstall moonlight-plugin-mozilla
again to make sure that we have exactly the same situation as when I
observed the crash?

Kind regards

           Andreas.

Not necessary, because MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 will take care of
disabling it entirely.

OK, "MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 iceweasel" is running.  The msdn page
in question shows the "bluish" layout as it did after installing moonlight.
Just lets see what happens and if the browser stays tomorrow morning I
will deinstall moonlight.

Hard way to debug if you have to wait one day for each test ...

Thanks for your quick responses anyway

I can confirm that the crash did not occured when
MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 is set.  Then I started iceweasel from
command line (without this option again) and got:

$ iceweasel
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
   what():  std::bad_alloc
Abgebrochen

(Abgebrochen = Terminated in German locale).

So it seems that some plugin is involved.  Do you have any hint how
to disable specific plugins to find out which one is responsible?

Kind regards

         Andreas.

The best way is (unfortunately) to remove them one by one. There is a
way to disable them through the GUI, but it is not complete: the plugins
are still initialized, but kept from handling the objects in the web
pages.

Cheers,

Mike

Were you able to isolate which plugin was responsible for that ?

Cheers,

Mike

Unfortunately not.  I was not able to spend more time on this issue and
currently there is no need to keep the pages which cause the problem
open in my browser.  I Think I will come back to this issue in the new
year.  Meanwhile I upgrade to new minor version of Iceweasel and perhaps
the problem might be disappeared.  I will report and close the bug if
this should be the case.

Many thanks for caring for every single bug this carefully!

Have a nice Christmas
