I am currently not really sure, if I could trust my hardware.
It would be nice, if some one else, with a similar Nvidia graphic-card
and noveau driver could try to reproduce the problem.

Bug#793415: freeorion leads to GPU lock up with nouveau driver on GeForce 9400 GT

Hello,

thanks for your feedback and for testing the latest version of FreeOrion.

I can make the following suggestion:

There will be a new release in August and then I will ping you again,
perhaps this one already fixes your issue.

However your bug appears to be very specific and related to your nouveau
driver / hardware setup. If it was a major problem, you would normally
see more bug reports but you are the first one in two years who seems to
be affected. It definitely didn't happen to me but then I also use a
Radeon HD 6400 video card for testing. I also couldn't find any
information in FreeOrion's forum or similar bug reports.

I will keep this bug report open and get back to you when FreeOrion
0.4.5 has been released.

Regards,

Markus

Hello,

I have uploaded the final 0.4.5 release of Freeorion to
jessie-backports. Please test this version again and report back if you
can still reproduce the error.

If it still happens I suggest to open a thread in the "Support" forum at

http://www.freeorion.org/forum/

They will need a debugging backtrace of the crash.

the problem still occurs.
But now I have seen this problem also with vlc, while playing the
video of an attached USB-Webcam.
So it seems, that this is a bug in the nouveau driver or in the
hardware itself.

Hello,

if other applications trigger the same issue it is most likely a bug in
the nouveau driver. I have seen similar reports before that the desktop
suddenly freezes but they differ depending on the specific Nvidia card
in use.

I am reassigning this issue to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in the hope
that the nouveau maintainer can assist in debugging the issue and
forward it upstream if necessary.

Markus
