Bug#908712: linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-marvell: stretch-backports kernel 4.17 breaks QNAP TS-209

Ralf Hemberger
Package: linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-marvell
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I ugraded the kernel to the stretch-backports version with apt.
After reboot the kernel couldn't find the PHY [41.082447],
subsequently followed a kernel oops / crash, systemd-udevd crashes.
See attached dmesg.

No eth0, quite a serious problem.

I don't know whether it is related, but with the stretch kernel the ethernet driver

marvell                10233  1
mvmdio                  3004  1
mv643xx_eth            26997  0
of_mdio                 6877  2 mv643xx_eth,mvmdio
fixed_phy               3029  1 of_mdio
libphy                 30062  5 of_mdio,mv643xx_eth,mvmdio,marvell,fixed_phy

is all =m, but with the backports kernel most of them are =y (see attached effective kernel config).

I tried the following kernel from stretch-backports and experimental
on my buffalo linkstation, but all booted successfully.

ii  linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-marvell   4.17.17-1~bpo9+1
armel        Linux 4.17 for Marvell Kirkwood/Orion

ii  linux-image-4.19.0-rc3-marvell       4.19~rc3-1~exp1
armel        Linux 4.19-rc3 for Marvell Kirkwood/Orion

However, I removed systemd on my armel boxes, which maybe different than Ralf's.

Another difference is that the buffalo linkstation is based on device tree.
I can try this weekend whether removing systemd makes a difference.

Bug#908712: linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-marvell: stretch-backports kernel 4.17 breaks QNAP TS-209

Ralf Hemberger
Hello,

> I can try this weekend whether removing systemd makes a difference.
Installing sysvinit-core made no difference.
I tried the older backports-kernels and the problem exists already with linux-image-4.12.0-0.bpo.2-marvell_4.12.13-1~bpo9+1_armel.deb.
(linux-image-4.11.0-0.bpo.1-marvell_4.11.6-1~bpo9+1_armel.deb crashed even earlier:  [    0.000000] INITRD: 0x00800000+0x00400000 overlaps in-use memory region - disabling initrd)

I found this bug report:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/arm-kernel/msg653367.html ([PROBLEM] orion5x: Kernel boot panic at of_clk_get()/orion_mdio_probe() on a non DT box on linux-4.16.7).

A working 4.9-kernel prints these messages:

[   24.586445] mv643xx_eth: MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4

With kernel > 4.12 you get e.g.:

Ralf, have you been able to find out more about this issue?

If not, it might be worth copying Andrew Lunn <[hidden email]> who is
the kernel upstream expert for Orion.

Ralf, is this issue still there?

Bug#908712: linux-image-4.17.0-0.bpo.3-marvell: stretch-backports kernel 4.17 breaks QNAP TS-209

In reply to this post by Ralf Hemberger
Unfortuantely I'm not aware of any changes.

I just saw a message from Marcus Better from January that the problem
is in 4.19, so I assume it's still there.

Can one of you please try the latest kernel in stretch-backports (or
even 5.0.2 in experimental).  If the problem is there, please show the
error message.

If it's still there, we have to inform Andrew Lunn <[hidden email]>
who is the upstream kernel contact for Orion.
