Error in /var/log/message

Like to know if someone can explain what the following messages mean:

Client told me the server was not responding when he came in and therefore he rebooted (turned off the server).

I'm no expert, but it looks like a kernel oops caused by an inability to
handle a paging request, and it looks like tar was doing something when it
happened.  Did you check the system logs for what happened right before
then?  Were any cron jobs running?

Are you up-to-date with all your software?  What distro/version are you
running?  Any unusual hardware?

Looks like a massive tar job that maybe exceeded available memory?
