ThinkPad T60p X11 driver problems

Bob Proulx
IBM ThinkPad T60p
Intel T2600 cpu (32-bits)
AMD/ATI RV530/M56 GL Mobility FireGL V5200 graphics

Fresh install of Debian Stretch 9.  X11 starts in software rendering
mode.  The same laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 runs with hardware rendering.

Any hints on how what is needed for hardware rendering with this
hardware combination in Debian?  I am sure this hardware used to be
fully supported and therefore hardware support must have been dropped
at some point.

Bob,

I abandoned my TP60 many years ago but i remember the prorietary fglrx driver for X worked best, in comparison the alternate free X driver was not optimized. However at some point fglrx was no more supported. There might be ways to insert it from some package archive, though. Look for stuff with 'legacy' in its name.
You would need to (create and) insert the driver name ('fglrx') into /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually too.
Usually such tings ends up in hassles though ...

(I had many optimizations there, but then i gave my TP60 away and i think they reinstalled a Windows 7 so i can't look up the configs)

The current FOSS ati driver works fine on my T60p with V5250, installed first time.

what does inxi -Fixw show in the graphics section as current driver on your machine.

I happen to be typing this message on my T60p which is a slightly
newer model with a slightly newer graphics adapter.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV530/M66 GL [Mobility FireGL V5250]

Works great.  On this T60p.  But not on this one.

Thanks for the help anyway! :-)

Yes.  Me too!  Although this happens to be an older version of the
software.  Makes me worry that it would start failing upon an upgrade.

Works great on that T60p.  But not on this one.

Thanks for your attention!  Here is the information you are asking
for.

In the meantime I think I will upgrade from Stretch to Sid and see if
the latest available kernel does anything different.  I could live
with a Buster or Sid kernel for example.  However this machine is
actually a retired mechanic friend's machine and not mine so trying to
keep it as simple as possible.

This following is on the problematic machine.

Does

 dmesg | grep radeon

say anything about firmware?  Do you have the firmware-amd-graphics
package installed (from non-free)?

I thought I remember it complaining that it needed root when I ran it
as non-root.  Because that prevented it full access to the machine
checks that it needed.  No?  I will try it again.  In the meantime
following parallel paths I think the problem was the missing
firmware.  You will see this in my next message.

> You did the install?

Yes.

For a little more background that might or might not be interesting is
that my 80 year old retired airplane mechanic's wife is the computer
user in their family and has been using a MS-Windows machine.  It had
become very slow and difficult to maintain.  So I gave them this T60p
laptop running, I am embarrassed to say here, Ubuntu 16.04.  The
hardware may sound old but it was basically a brand new and never
before used laptop despite the vintage with a large bright display.
It had the best sized display for them to see and that is important.

There were various reasons for using Ubuntu on that system instead of
my preference of Debian.  However on the big plus side she loved the
system running a kiosk mode configuration with the cinamon desktop
with the largest fonts and icons I could configure.  The only program
they ever run is a web browser.  It was a good upgrade for them and
they really liked it.

That worked great for about two years until just recently when two
things happened.  One is that something happened to the graphics
driver and it had this very odd flashing black rectangle problem
whenever the display was being updated.  Extremely visible and
annoying.  Two is that Ubuntu dropped all support for 32-bit hardware
as of Ubuntu 18.04.  There was no upgrade future.  Of course I know
16.04 is supported a while longer.

In any case I wanted to switch the system back to my preference of
Debian and after backing everything up I installed Stretch 9 as a
fresh installation.  And that is when I ran into these graphics driver
problems.  (And an upgrade to Sid did not fix things.)  But thanks to
the help here I think I have the solution.  More in a future message.

That kernel should have been the latest available kernel at the time
of the installation.  However unexpected confusion can result when
switching back and forth between machines and multiple installations
and so forth.

I think I am on track now.  I am re-installing a pristine Stretch 9 to
test the theory.

Thank you!  That was the hint I needed.  Let me put the root problem
here so that the search engines can find it.

  dmesg | grep radeon
  [    4.026170] radeon 0000:01:00.0: firmware: failed to load radeon/R520_cp.bin (-2)
[    4.026297] radeon 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/R520_cp.bin failed with error -2

There is no firmware available.  Without the firmware the radeon
adapter is not fully functional and X must run in software rendering
mode.  The firmware is available but has been removed from Stretch.

(I should have seen that myself.  I was aware of the drivers in
firmware-linux-nonfree and also firmware-iwlwifi from nonfree but not
of firmware-amd-graphics which must be a new'ish change / addition.
Thank you very much for helping lead me through the problem to see
this and to fix it.  [me kicks the ground with my head hanging down
because I should have seen this myself.] )

The solution for the X11 software rendering problem was to install
the radeon adapter firmware from the non-free section.  Add non-free
to /etc/apt/sources.list and install the radeon firmware.

  apt-get install firmware-amd-graphics

I also installed firmware-linux-nonfree (and firmware-misc-nonfree may
also be needed) so as to get the intel-microcode updates too.  And
also firmware-iwlwifi for the Intel iwl3945 wifi driver.

Thanks everyone for helping me get this system running!  Now it is
time for me to merge in the user files from backup and get this
machine back to my mechanic's wife.  She is getting anxious for it. :-)

Glad to see you fixed it, but a question are you running in DRI3 mode?
I just found my T60p was running only in DRI2 mode and a few simple changes
to xorg.conf enabled DRI3

in device section set DRI3 to True is all it needs.

Glad to see you fixed it, but a question are you running in DRI3 mode?

No, AFAIK the X11 driver doesn't need to bypass any password.

Firstly download the HMM from Thinkpad Forum, then get the model number off label on the underside of the machone then read HMM.

No.  It I am sure it defaults to DRI2 mode.  (Pretty sure anyway.  I
no longer have immediate access to that machine.  I'll see it again
soon enough though.  If I learn otherwise later I will update this
with a correction.)

However the benchmarks I have seen (phoronix site) don't show a
compelling reason to enable DRI3 for me.  The most pressing thing that
machine will be doing will be the web browser.  So I will let it stay
with the defaults.  But perhaps others should try it and benchmark and
see if it benefits them.

I assume you haven't seen any stability issues in DRI3 mode?  If not
then that is good to hear.  Maybe they should make that the default
mode moving forward.

Thanks for mentioning that DRI2 is the default and DRI3 may be
optionally enabled.  That is a good tidbit to know.

Probably just me but the font rendering seems better and the screen redraws seem faster.
The reason i enbaled it was it's supposedly more stable and secure in how it access root.

It only made it in 2014 for the R500 series driver so it's kinda been ignored.
It's been totally stable for me
