Trying to compile Mac-on-Linux 0.9.72.1 - various errors; Help appreciated

Linux User #330250
Hello!

I'm trying to compile Mac-on-Linux (MOL) on a current Debian unstable
powerpc system. It hangs and I don't know what's wrong, so HELP is
highly appreciated.

Before you ask: yes, I know that MOL is likely to fail on a recent Linux
system. Anyway, the error doesn't seem to be related to that particular
circumstance.

What I did:
1) Download MOL from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mac-on-linux/files/mac-on-linux/mol-0.9.72.1/mol-0.9.72.1.tar.bz2/download
and unpack, I used /usr/local/src/ for unpacking.
2) Get dependencies, requirements:
   a) apt install build-essential fakeroot devscripts
   b) ./autogen.sh and ./configure revealed some dependences, which are:
      apt install zlib1g-dev linux-headers-powerpc-smp libasound2-dev
libpng-dev libpng-dev

I then again ran:
1) fakeroot ./autogen.sh
==================================================
  Invoking autoheader and autoconf.
  The next step is 'make'
==================================================

2) fakeroot ./configure

So, what's the problem with the xdga error?
And why is off64_t a problem? FYI, I had the exact same error when I
tried to compile it all with ONLY zlib1g-dev installed, i.e. before I
installed (apt install) linux-headers-powerpc-smp libasound2-dev
libpng-dev libpng-dev.

Does this make any sense at all?

Thanks in advance.

This was a classic copy&paste mistake, sorry. It should read
*libx11-dev* instead of 2x libpng-dev... :(

I also forget that I already hat libncurses5-dev installed (from
building a kernel).

I just found this:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-to-mac-on-linux-mol-kvm-on-ubuntu-mate-ppc-g5.2034161/

So I added:
*) apt install subversion zlibc flex bison libxext-dev

So, ./configure output now looks like this:

mentioned in

even though I don't need the KVM part.

Re: Trying to compile Mac-on-Linux 0.9.72.1 [SOLVED]

The SVN version compiled with the KVM option. Testing it is another
story, but it compiled alright. Maybe it was the missing /usr/src/linux
symlink to the current kernel, so I set KERNEL_SOURCE to the recently
compiled 4.11 vanilla kernel instead.

If that's successful, I think I want to know about it.

One of these days I'll get someone to pay me
to design a language that combines the best of Forth and C.
Then I'll be able to leap wide instruction sets with a single #ifdef,
run faster than a speeding infinite loop with a #define,
and stop all integer size bugs with a bare cast.

More of my delusions:

I thought I'd have time this weekend to try it, but apparently not. What
I was able to find out so far is that I need to use the non-SMP kernel,
otherwise there's no way to get KVM on powerpc. Thus, I compiled a new
4.11.0 kernel, this time with SMP disabledbut with KVM enabled. After a
reboot I was able to modprobe kvmwithout errors. Sadly, the KVM-PR
module is not available on powerpc.

However, it should work on a G4 according to this post:
https://techuman.wordpress.com/2013/09/12/powerpc-g4-virtualization-with-kvm/

And for the G5, here:
http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8449

That said, I willreport back once I have actually tried out mac-on-linux
on this G4 Mac of mine. If it works, that would just be great. I also
plan to try it on my G5 Mac, which should even work better, but I will
need more time for this than for the G4, as I haven't even installed a
working Linux on the G5. Graphics problems.

Stand-by, as this can time some time (until I find the time)...

Cheers,
Linux User #330250

Running this on a G5 Quad must be tough! Since KVM on PowerPC requires
to disable SMP, you will be utilizing only one for the 4 processor cores...

I've had the same issue on my G4 Dual-800 MHz. The cost to get KVM on a
multi-processor Mac may not be worth it.

Though I have to wander, why is KVM not working with SMP? IMHO this
should be fixed...

Luigi Burdo

Hi,

mol use only one core ... but in near future you will use all on qemu in kvm smp

Just for info

Mac-on-Linux/KVM PR works without any problems on my P.A. Semi PA6T PPC64 SMP CPU.

Yes, the P.A. Semi PA6T is a 64-bit processor (PPC64), so that's why.

On my Power Mac G5, Motorola 7450 Dual 800 MHz, I only get the
/lib/modules/4.11.0/arch/powerpc/kvm/kvm.ko modules. The G4
(PPC7400/7410 as well as PPC7440/7450) is only a 32-bit processor
(PPC32). So that's why I cannot find a kvm-pr modules or such.

Relevant lines im my kernel .config:
root@G4QS:~# cat /boot/config-4.11.0 | grep KVM
CONFIG_KVM_GUEST=y
CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_EVENTFD=y
CONFIG_KVM_MMIO=y
CONFIG_KVM_VFIO=y
CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_BYPASS=y
CONFIG_KVM=y
CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_HANDLER=y
CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_32_HANDLER=y
CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_PR_POSSIBLE=y
CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_32=m

This is a non-SMP kernel. When I want SMP, CONFIG_KVM is not available.
 From the kernel config help:
 > CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_32:
 >
 > Support running unmodified book3s_32 guest kernels

KVM_BOOK3S_PR_POSSIBLE [=y]

As you can see it says !SMP.

So now I looked for KVM-PM:
 > Symbol: KVM_BOOK3S_64_PR [=n]
 > Type  : tristate
 > Prompt: KVM support without using hypervisor mode in host
 >   Location:

 >   Depends on: VIRTUALIZATION [=y] && KVM_BOOK3S_64 [=n]
 >   Selects: KVM_BOOK3S_PR_POSSIBLE [=y]

Interesting. As you can see, this is exclusively for 64-bit systems
(BOOK3S_64), not for 32-bit systems (BOOK3S_32).

What I do have is this:
 > Symbol: KVM_BOOK3S_PR_POSSIBLE [=y]
 > Type  : boolean
 >   Defined at arch/powerpc/kvm/Kconfig:41
 >   Depends on: VIRTUALIZATION [=y]
 >   Selects: KVM_MMIO [=y] && MMU_NOTIFIER [=y]
 >   Selected by: KVM_BOOK3S_32 [=m] && VIRTUALIZATION [=y] &&
PPC_BOOK3S_32 [=y] && !SMP [=n] && !PTE_64BIT [=n] || KVM_BOOK3S_64 [=n]
&& VIRTUALIZATION [=y] && PPC_BOOK3S_64 [=n] && !KVM_BOOK3S_HV_POSSIBLE
[=n] || KVM_BOOK3S_64_PR [=n] && VIRTUALIZATION [=y] && KVM_BOOK3S_64 [=n]

But this doesn't help much... PPC32 just cannot have KVM-PR (yet)...

Sorry, I meant to write Power Mac G4...
Otherwise it makes no sense.
